Why Every Website Needs Monthly Hosting (And What You're Actually Paying For)

Most business owners are happy to pay for a website build and then surprised by the monthly hosting line that follows. It is a fair question. If the site is already built, what exactly are you paying for every month? Here is a plain answer, including what hosting is, what the fee covers, and what happens if you do not have it.

What Hosting Actually Is

A website is a collection of files, images and code. For anyone to see it, those files have to sit on a computer that is connected to the internet around the clock and can send the right page to a visitor within a moment of them clicking. That computer, and the network behind it, is your hosting. Your domain name is the address, and hosting is the building at that address. Without it, the address leads nowhere.

What the Monthly Fee Covers

  • Fast delivery of your pages. IAS websites are hosted on Vercel's global edge network, which serves your pages from locations close to your visitors rather than from a single distant server. Speed matters for customers and for search rankings, which we explain in our guide to how website speed costs you customers.
  • An SSL certificate. This is what puts the padlock and the https in front of your address. Browsers warn visitors away from sites without a valid certificate, so it is a basic trust signal as well as a security feature.
  • Uptime monitoring. If a site goes offline, someone needs to notice. Monitoring means a problem is caught and dealt with quickly rather than being discovered by a customer.
  • Secure hosting. The platform your site runs on is maintained and kept up to date, so you are not left managing servers yourself.

Why the Build Price and the Hosting Fee Are Separate

The build is a one-off project. It covers design, development and the technical SEO foundation. Hosting is a running cost, like the rent or power bill on a shopfront. You need both, and keeping them separate means the build price is honest about what the project costs, while the monthly fee stays small and predictable. Every IAS website includes hosting from $59 per month plus GST, and you can see how this sits alongside our packages in our guide to the Foundation, Growth and Bespoke packages.

What Happens If You Stop Paying for Hosting

The site goes offline. Visitors see an error page instead of your business, enquiries stop, and search engines find nothing where your pages used to be. Short outages are usually forgiven, but extended downtime can cost you rankings that took months to build, and winning them back is slower than keeping the site up in the first place.

Questions to Ask Any Hosting Provider

Cheap hosting and good hosting are not the same product, and the difference rarely shows up until something goes wrong. Whoever you use, including us, ask:

  • What exactly is included? SSL, monitoring, backups and support are worth confirming one by one.
  • Where is my site hosted, and how quickly are pages delivered to visitors in Australia?
  • Who handles updates when something needs changing?
  • Are there extra charges I should know about, for traffic, changes or support?

Hosting Is Only One Layer of Security

Good hosting protects the platform, but your own habits matter too. The Australian Cyber Security Centre's small business cyber security guide recommends turning on multi-factor authentication, keeping software updated and backing up information. Its small business handbook adds that regular backups help a business recover data that is lost, stolen or damaged. Apply the same thinking to the logins that control your website, domain and email.

Hosting Only or Hosting Plus Updates

Our hosting-only option starts from $59 per month plus GST. If you also want ongoing updates to your site looked after, our hosting plus updates option starts from $99 per month plus GST. Both are listed on our services page, and a short call is usually enough to work out which suits your business. If you are weighing up the build cost as well, our comparison of a $1,999 website against a $200 freelancer build shows where the extra money goes.

What Good Hosting Looks Like in Practice

You do not need technical knowledge to check whether your hosting is doing its job. Three quick tests tell you most of what you need to know.

  • Test your speed. Run your address through Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool and look at the mobile result. Slow pages on a phone are a sign that something in the build or the hosting needs attention.
  • Check that it stays up. Ask whether anyone is monitoring your site and how you would be told if it went down. A site that fails silently overnight can cost you enquiries before anyone notices.
  • Look at the padlock. Open your site on a phone and check that the address starts with https and that the browser shows no warning. A warning usually means the certificate has lapsed.

If any of these checks fail, raise it with whoever looks after your site. Problems found early are usually quick fixes, while problems found by customers rarely are.

Three Common Hosting Myths

  • "Hosting is a one-off cost." It is not. A website needs somewhere to live for as long as you want it online, so hosting is an ongoing cost for as long as the site is live.
  • "Free hosting is just as good." Free plans often come with limits on speed, support or branding, so read the fine print before relying on one for a business.
  • "Hosting and a domain name are the same thing." They are separate. The domain is the address, hosting is where the site lives, and you can buy one without the other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hosting included in the website package price?

No. The package price covers the build. Hosting is a separate monthly fee, from $59 plus GST, and applies to every IAS website.

What happens to my website if hosting lapses?

It goes offline. Visitors cannot reach it, enquiries stop, and extended downtime can hurt the search rankings you have built.

Does hosting affect my Google ranking?

Yes, indirectly. Page speed and uptime both influence how search engines and visitors treat your site, and both depend on the hosting underneath it.

Is cheaper hosting just as good?

Not necessarily. Compare what is actually included, including speed, uptime monitoring, SSL, security and support, rather than judging on the monthly price alone.

What is the difference between hosting only and hosting plus updates?

Hosting only keeps the site online, secure and monitored, from $59 plus GST per month. Hosting plus updates also covers ongoing updates to the site, from $99 plus GST per month.
